What is an EPA Five-Year Review? 
EPA inspects Superfund sites every five years to ensure that cleanups conducted remain fully protective of 
people’s health and the environment. These regular reviews, which are required by federal law when contaminants 
remain at a site, include: 
 
Inspecting the site and cleanup technologies; 
 
Reviewing monitoring data, operating data, and maintenance records; and, 
 
Determining if any new regulatory requirements have been established since EPA’s original cleanup decision 
was finalized. 
 
When will EPA’s Five-Year Review Report be available?  
It is anticipated that the five-year review report will be available at the website noted below in September 
2024.

Cleanup at Florence Land Recontouring Landfill Superfund Site 
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is conducting its fifth five-year review of the cleanup activities 
implemented for Florence Land Recontouring Landfill Superfund site, located in Burlington County, New 
Jersey. This review seeks to confirm that the cleanup conducted at the site continues to protect people’s 
health and the environment and functions as intended.  
 
The upcoming FYR report reviews the activities from the June 1986 cleanup plan to control the potential 
release of contaminants from the landfill. These activities include: constructing a synthetic membrane and clay 
cap; constructing a slurry containment wall; constructing an groundwater system and new storm water 
management system; treating leachate and disposing at a publicly owned treatment works; collecting and treating 
gas; removing and disposing of lagoon liquids and sediment, and other surface debris; constructing a fence with 
warning signs, and operation and maintenance of the constructed plan as well as providing supplemental 
sampling of groundwater, surface water, and sediment. A summary of these activities and evaluation of the long-
term protectiveness of the cleanup plan will be included in the upcoming five-year review report which will be 
available in September 2024.
