The Borough of Frenchtown
COMMUNITY PROFILE
About
Frenchtown
Frenchtown is special for reasons difficult to sum up in
a few sentences. Some say it’s the passionate, close-knit
community, others insist its uniqueness rises out of the
ever-shifting beauty of the Delaware River and
surrounding valley. Visitors will refer to the friendly
shopkeepers, eclectic mix of award-winning family-run
restaurants and the growing arts scene.
The magic of Frenchtown is of all of these things and
more. The simplest way to explain the energy of this
riverside community is encapsulated in two simple
words…Love Frenchtown.

History,
Culture, & Arts
Frenchtown is officially just over 150 years
old but it’s history reaches back to the Lenni
Lenape tribe who populated the area until
Europeans took over in the 1750s.
The area was purchased by Paul Henri Mallet-
Prevost in 1794.
The Bastille Day Fete is one of several annual
festivals including RiverFest, which celebrates
life and the environment along the river;
Frenchtown PRIDE; ZombieCrawl; Santa
Along the River, and most recently, ArtYard’s
Hatch, a coming together of communal
creativity where an assortment of revelers
dress in bird couture, hatch from a giant egg
and parade about town.
Mallet-Prevost, who was Swiss, fled France to
avoid a date with the guillotine. He brought
along his family and other French speakers,
which gave the settlement its current name.
Frenchtown became official in 1829 and
today the borough does celebrate Bastille
Day but not many locals or visitors realize the
ironic connection to the French Revolution.
Things To Do
Shopping & Dining
Wander through downtown’s shops and galleries and
discover fine art, antiques or antiquarian books as well as
modern home furnishings, new and vintage clothing and
so much more. Many of the items are uniquely
Frenchtown because they were designed, written,
created locally. While the restaurants also capture a
uniquely Frenchtown feel, they feature internationally-
inspired menus with award-winning dishes. The café
scene also offers something for everyone.
Frenchtown and the surrounding area offers a wide array
of outdoor fun. Hiking, rafting, birding, cycling, swimming
or just strolling along the river all literally on its doorstep
and in the community. The borough alone boasts three
parks and two preserves, and let’s not forget the
community garden.

Jones Financial Advisor
As a resident and local Financial Advisor, I
wouldn't pick a better place to be. I run a
one mile loop around the creek and then 2
miles through town every morning. It feels
as if we live in a "beach town,"
but then again Frenchtown is a river town.
My clients love the ambiance, the local
restaurants and shops when they come to
visit and I love the density. With only around
1300 residents, there is a significant sense of
community. I cannot go to the park, grab food
or frequent my favorite shop without running
into a good friend!
I own and operated Yoga Loka in Frenchtown.
We are celebrating our 18th year in business!
I have lived in Frenchtown with my husband
and 2 children for 12 years. I could not imagine
a better place to live and run a business. While
growing up in NYC, I always had the feeling
that the hectic pace, the crowded streets and
living conditions, and the preponderance of
impersonal exchanges were not how humans
were meant to live. When I came to
Frenchtown I realized this is exactly what I
dreamt about- a small village setting that
supports joy and community spirit. Living
among neighbors that care deeply for you and
your family, and serving a clientele that
appreciate the value of family owned
businesses are what make it so wonderful to
live and work here.

Frenchtown Inn, Owners
We have called Frenchtown home for the past
23 years. We chose Frenchtown to raise a
family and start a business because of the
'small town American' feel. The river, towpath,
and friendly and safe community give it a
'gated community feel' without the gates.
Many of our local Frenchtown small businesses
play a key part in keeping the river towns alive
with history, tourism, arts and dining.
Many of our guests when discovering
Frenchtown often exclaim, " We love this
town" or "We never knew this was here it feels
like home" our favorite "I can't believe this is
New Jersey!" Frenchtown is our home, our
community, and our village.
