LONG HILL TOWNSHIP OFFERS FREE SMOKE ALARMS TO RESIDENTS 
Township Partners with the NJ Division of Fire Safety, Kidde and WABC-TV Channel 7: The 
“SAVE-A-LIFE SMOKE ALARM DISTRIBUTION CAMPAIGN” has come to Long Hill Township. This program 
provides free 10-year sealed battery smoke alarms for households lacking in adequate smoke alarm 
protection. Designed largely to assist senior citizens, low-income residents, households with children 
and other members of the community in need, these life-saving devices are the product of a unified 
effort by the NJ State Department of Community Affairs, the State Fire Marshal’s Office, Kidde Fire 
Safety Equipment and WABC-TV Channel  7.
“We are extremely pleased that this continuing partnership with Kidde and WABC-TV Channel 7 will 
allow us to distribute free smoke alarms in Long Hill Township and communities across New Jersey”, said 
State Fire Marshal and Director of the NJ Division of Fire Safety Richard Mikutsky. “The units come in 
very nicely-packaged boxes, but the end-game is to get them out of the boxes and into homes where 
they can do the most good”, he added with a smile. 
“Smoke alarms reduce home fire fatalities by about 50%”, added Long Hill Township Mayor Brendan 
Rae, “and the early warning these devices provide can also be extremely instrumental in reducing the 
inherent risks to emergency responders”.  Words spoken by someone who knows of such risks, as 
Mayor Rae is also a member of the Millington Volunteer Fire Company. 
Township Administrator Nancy Malool expressed high praise and appreciation for the solid commitment 
the DCA and its partners have made in sustaining this life-saving program at no-cost to tax payers 
anywhere in the State. “It’s rare that such a valuable service as this can be delivered with no price tag 
other than calling in to submit a request,” she noted. “Another nice feature of this program is that our 
residents will no longer need to climb on chairs or step ladders to change smoke alarm batteries,” she 
added, “and that should help prevent needless slips and falls in the home as well.”

available while supplies last and can even be installed free of charge at the home owner’s request.
