RESIDENTIAL RECREATIONAL FIRE SAFETY STANDARDS 
-By Don Huber, Fire Official, Township of Long Hill- 
 
1. Select a safe location to construct a reasonably-sized fire pit on level ground and totally 
surround it with fire-retardant materials such as brick, stone or other masonry materials 
to a height of 1 to 2 feet from ground level. 
 
2. Maintain a safe distance (at least 15’) from the perimeter of the fire pit to your house and 
any other structures, exposures, combustibles, flammable liquids, or LPG vessels on or 
near your property, as well as a 15’ minimum distance from all property lines. 
 
3. Limit the overall height of any open flame to 2 or 3 feet above the burning materials. 
 
4. Keep a properly-sized working fire extinguisher or charged garden hose in place at all 
times the fire is burning. 
 
5. Never leave an open burning or smoldering fire unattended by a responsible adult. 
 
6. Only burn kindling and firewood (NO LUMBER, TRASH, DEBRIS, OR OTHER REFUSE). 
 
7. Keep small children at a safe distance from the perimeter of the fire pit at all times even 
when cooking hot dogs, roasting marshmallows, or like activities. 
 
8. Remain vigilant for high winds or extreme dry weather conditions that might preempt 
outside burning of any kind (check with Police or Fire Official if uncertain). 
 
9. Be mindful and courteous; Avoid heavy or obnoxious volumes of embers, smoke, or odors 
from drifting to and lingering on neighboring properties. 
 
10. Make sure the fire and all burning/glowing embers are completely extinguished when 
done. 
         
      ALL RESIDENTIAL RECREATIONAL FIRES WILL BE AT THE DISCRETION OF LOCAL POLICE AND THE FIRE OFFICIAL
