Barnsboro Inn
Mantua Township is a community built on history, heart, and
togetherness. From the Barnsboro Inn, standing since 1720 as New
Jersey's oldest operating tavern, to the ancient wonders of the Edelman
Fossil Park and Museum of Rowan University, our story spans
centuries and even millions of years. Our close proximity to
Philadelphia, with views of its iconic skyline, connects Mantua
Township to the broader story of our region and nation. The image of a
fire truck traveling through town reflects the dedication, service, and
caring spirit that keep our community vibrant and connected. Everyday
life here blends historic landmarks, active neighborhoods, and local
institutions that make Mantua Township a distinct place to live.

Dear Community Friends,
As we close out another successful year and embark into a promising 2026, I’m happy to share that Mantua continues to be recognized as a top town in Gloucester
County and throughout Southern New Jersey by South Jersey Magazine.
Ranking number three in Gloucester County and number nine in South Jersey in 2025 was derived through data from the New Jersey State Police, the New Jersey
Department of Education, and the state’s Division of Local Government Services. A weighted formula that combined average property values and taxes, crime
reports, and school performance numbers, etc., landed Mantua at the top of the charts once again.
Mantua is more than a place to live; it’s a place where our neighbors look out for one another, where our schools, parks, and local businesses thrive, and where
families can establish their roots with confidence. Whether it’s our treasured history, strong community partnerships, the dedication of volunteers, or the steady
progress of improvements through visionary leadership, Mantua stands out because of you, our incredible residents.
I want to personally thank everyone in our community who works tirelessly to make Mantua stronger, safer, and better each year. Our volunteers, our employees,
our schools, our public safety and emergency services, our business owners, our residents, and even those who visit the great place we call home have created an
impactful and lasting difference.
We’re proud to be recognized as such a desirable place to live, play, and raise our families, and we will continue to work assiduously in 2026 to become an even
stronger, more connected, and more vibrant community for everyone who belongs to the Mantua family.
I want to emphasize that effective communication and transparency will always be prioritized during my tenure as your mayor. I’m excited to announce that our
soon-to-be-launched new township website will feature “Straight From The Mayor,” a dedicated space on our homepage to better effectuate these efforts.
I enthusiastically look forward to my continued service with honesty, integrity, and trustworthy leadership. Thank you for allowing me the great privilege of serving
in this cherished position of public trust.
The township committee and I want to wish you a very happy, healthy, and prosperous 2026.
Respectfully,
Mayor Robert T. Zimmerman, MAS

Senior and Veteran Tax Deductions
The Township of Mantua utilizes a county-wide Tax
Assessor’s Office to ensure consistency and fairness in
property valuation across the county. The primary function of
the Assessor’s office is to determine the full and fair market
value of all real property within the county for assessment
purposes. The office is also responsible for preparing and
maintaining up-to-date tax lists, preserving accurate records,
and updating tax maps to reflect any changes.

As of 2025, qualifying New Jersey residents can apply for property tax
relief using Form PAS-1, a single application for eligible homeowners,
mobile home owners, and renters age 65 or older, as well as individuals
receiving Social Security Disability benefits. PAS-1 combines three
programs into one application: Senior Freeze (Property Tax
Reimbursement), ANCHOR, and Stay NJ. Separate applications are
no longer required—the State will determine eligibility and calculate
benefits. PAS-1 can be filed online at propertytaxrelief.nj.gov. For
more information, call 1-(888)-238-1233.

OUR PARKS
Ceres Park - 403 Pitman Road/940 Main Street
Ceres Park is a peaceful stretch of natural growth, home to a lively mix of
mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and many bird species. Its winding trails move
through upland and wetland forests, making the preserve feel larger than its 52
acres. A one‑mile path starts at the parking lot and connects with several other
trails that lead to views of Emerald and Cedar Lakes. The walking, jogging, and
biking paths continue past the Chestnut Branch of Mantua Creek and into nearby
county lands, giving visitors even more to explore. For details and a trail map,
visit www.mantuatownship.com.
McCarson Park: Corner of Mercer Avenue and Mantua Boulevard
Formerly known as Sewell Playground, this park is now dedicated to Trooper
Eli McCarson, who tragically lost his life in a 2015 on-duty car crash. It offers a
welcoming play area for young children, basketball courts, and inviting picnic
spots. A memorial plaque and a paver triangle shaped like a trooper’s badge
provide a heartfelt tribute. The park also serves as a stop along the Police Unity
Tour, a 200+ mile cycling journey to Washington, D.C., honoring fallen officers.
Chestnut Branch Park - 545 Main Street
Named after the Chestnut Branch of Mantua Creek, Chestnut Branch Park offers
over 109 acres of cared‑for landscapes and facilities. The park features athletic
fields, a newly built disc golf course, wooded hills, winding trails, and rich
wildlife. As of November 2025, the playground now has a new rubberized surface
that replaces woodchips, making it safer and more welcoming for all. The paved
path around the fields is great for biking and walking, and it leads to the 9/11
Memorial Place of Reflection, a quiet space with shaded groves and benches. For
more details on the walking trails, please visit www.mantuatownship.com.
Events at Chestnut Branch Park
The Mantua Township Recreation Committee hosts a variety of different events
at Chestnut Branch Park, ranging from our Big Night Out to the Annual Winter
Festival. Additionally, various children's programs, sponsored by the Gloucester
County Board of Commissioners, are held at the park. For more information,
please visit our website at www.mantuatownship.com.

PATRIOT DAY CEREMONY
The Gloucester County Patriot Day Ceremony is our way
of continuing to remember the September 11th attacks.
The memorial service pays tribute to Gloucester County
residents John Rodak, Nicholas W. Brandemarti, and Perry
Thompson, who lost their lives during the attacks on
September 11, 2001.
The ceremony begins at 8:30 AM at the Place of Reflection
at Chestnut Branch Park, located on Main Street in
Mantua. The ceremony features a twisted I-beam from the
World Trade Center, a bell ringing to coincide with the
timing of events, and the laying of wreaths.
The Place of Reflection also includes a tribute to those who
lost their lives at the Pentagon, as well as in Shanksville,
PA.
The Pentagon Memorial Site features an 18-inch-tall sitting
wall shaped like the Pentagon and a block from a wall of
the Pentagon positioned at a distance of 9 ft. 11 in. from
the flagpole. Additionally, 184 gray border pavers outline
the sitting wall, representing the lives lost at the Pentagon
site.
The Shanksville Memorial Site features a sealed container
of soil and stones from the crash site of United Airlines
Flight 93.

WINTER UPDATES
The Mantua Township Mayor and Committee wish everyone a festive holiday season and a safe,
happy new year. As we celebrate, please stay prepared and mindful of winter safety reminders,
especially during snowy weather conditions.
Snow Reminders
The Mantua Township Police Department reminds all
residents that there is NO PARKING on ANY
Township street during a snowstorm or snow emergency
when snow removal equipment is in use.
We kindly ask residents to remove all vehicles, portable
basketball nets, boats, and RVs from the streets to
allow our Public Works Department to safely and
effectively plow in a timely manner.
Additionally, we emphasize that depositing snow on any
roadway within the Township is strictly prohibited. We
urge all residents to be mindful of the following
ordinances to ensure the safe and effective removal of
snow from all Township roadways (L.O. 143-22 & L.O.
350-28).
Thank you for your cooperation.

Mantua Township Highlights
In 2025, Mantua Township continued investing in
enhancements that strengthen our community and elevate
our shared spaces—most notably at the beautiful Chestnut
Branch Park.
One improvement we are especially proud to unveil is the
newly resurfaced playground. What was once woodchips has
been transformed into a vibrant, rubberized surface
featuring the Mantua Township seal, designed with safety,
accessibility, and long-lasting enjoyment in mind.We hope
park visitors of all ages enjoy this exciting upgrade for years
to come.
Looking ahead, Mantua Township is also preparing to
launch a new municipal website in 2026, designed to enhance
community engagement and make it easier for residents to
find the information and services they need—anytime,
anywhere.
We remain committed to continuous improvement and
innovation as we work to meet resident needs and enhance
quality of life. Together, we look forward to building an
even stronger, more connected Mantua Township.
