Pet Management 
A long with the many responsibilities of owning a pet are the legal ones of which residents may 
not be aware. The following are provisions regarding the ownership of pets: 
No person shall keep on his property or in his possession more than 3 adult dogs or 3 adult cats 
without having first obtained a permit from the Board of Health. An adult animal is hereby 
defined as one over the age of 6 months. 
 
ALL dogs over the age of 6 months must be registered and licensed by the Township. 
(Noncompliance with the ordinance may result in issuance of an official court summons.)

License fee: $16.20 
• 
Unspayed/Unneutered: $3.00 additional 
• 
Licenses can be issued by mail. 
All license applications and fees must be returned by January 31 of the New Year. 
 
Contact the Tax Collector at the Municipal Building to obtain the registration forms (226-2304). 
 
Dogs are not permitted in parks or playgrounds at any time. 
 
Dogs must be kept on a leash of 8 feet or less at all times while in a public place. 
 
No person owning, keeping, harboring or in charge of any dog shall cause, suffer, or allow the 
dog to defile, soil, defecate on or commit any nuisance on any common thoroughfare, sidewalk, 
passageway, by-path, play area, park, or any place where people congregate or walk, or upon any 
private property without the permission of the owner of said property. 
 
(This does not apply to persons who shall immediately remove all feces in an approved sanitary 
method, and dispose of it in a manner approved by the local Board of Health.) 
 
Any person wishing to report a violation of any of the above provisions shall sign and file a 
formal complaint with the Magistrates Court of the Township of West Caldwell.
