Plastic Bag Ban

This document is a guide created by the Town of West New York to explain New Jersey's ban on single-use plastic carryout bags, polystyrene foam food service products, and plastic straws by request-only, as enacted by P.L. 2020, c.117. The law, signed on November 4, 2020, has two phases. Phase 1, effective November 4, 2021, requires that plastic straws are only provided to customers upon request. Phase 2, effective May 4, 2022, prohibits businesses from selling or providing single-use plastic carryout bags. The guide outlines the requirements, exemptions, and alternatives to these single-use items.
