U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Reviews  
Cleanup at Ventron/Velsicol Superfund Site 
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is conducting its first Five-Year Review of the 
Ventron/Velsicol Superfund site located in the boroughs of Wood-Ridge and Carlstadt, New Jersey.  
 
This review seeks to confirm that the cleanup conducted at the site is working as intended and that it 
continues to be protective of public health and the environment. Cleanup activities included excavation and 
off-site disposal of mercury-contaminated soil, capping of mercury-contaminated soils remaining on site, 
use restrictions on contaminated properties, a barrier system to contain high mercury concentrations under 
one of the buildings on site, and a clean buffer zone between the capped areas and creeks or wetlands. The 
cleanup was completed in 2010. Groundwater use restrictions have been put in place. A portion of the site 
is under planning for redevelopment. A summary of cleanup activities and an evaluation of the 
protectiveness of the implemented remedy will be included in the five-year review report.  
What is an EPA Five-Year Review? 
The purpose of five-year reviews is to ensure that implemented remedies at Superfund sites function 
as intended and continue to be protective of human health and the environment. These regular 
reviews, which are required by federal law when contaminants remain at a site, include: 
▪ Inspection of the site and cleanup technologies; 
▪ Review of monitoring data, operating data, and maintenance records, and 
▪ Determination if any new regulatory requirements have been established since EPA’s 
original cleanup decision was finalized. 
When will EPA’s Five-Year Review Report be available?  
The Five-Year Review report will be available at the website noted below by May 2017.
